Jill Curry – Guidance Counselor
My name is Jill Curry and I am the Guidance Counselor at Christ the King School. I work with students individually, in small groups, and also provide classroom lessons on topics such as social skills, conflict resolution, dealing with bullies, career awareness, and many others. I love working with young people and feel called by God to this work. I am grateful that God has always led me to work in places where I am free to share my faith and tell children about how God loves them. I received my Master’s degree in Psychology from New York University in 1994.
I have worked with youth in New York City, suburban Cleveland (where I am from originally), and Chicago. My life verse is Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord, “Plans to prosper and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” I try to convey this truth in my work with young people, so they, too can know that God has a plan and purpose for their lives, and there is great joy in discovering those as one grows. In addition to working with students, I also consult with teachers and meet with parents as needed or requested.
Courtney Lange – Music
My name is Courtney Lange and I grew up in the small north-Iowa town of Garner. A passion for music and opera led me to Simpson College where I performed in many of the collegiate opera performances. This is my first year teaching and I feel truly blessed to have been called to Christ the King where I can share the gifts I have been given. I look forward to getting to know all the students this school year and have many fun lessons and activities planned for the year.
Jennie Gervais – Band
Mrs. Jennifer (“Jennie”) Gervais grew up in Bettendorf, Iowa. She has always loved music and knew early on that she would be a music teacher. Mrs. Gervais took piano lessons as a child and joined the school band in 4th grade on clarinet. She received a Bachelor Degree from the University of Iowa (GO HAWKS!) and a Master Degree from Drake University.
Mrs. G has over 30 years of teaching experience collectively from Rock Falls (Illinois), WACO Community School District (Iowa), Colfax-Mingo Schools, and St. Joseph Catholic School. She has enjoyed playing in community bands throughout her career.
Mrs. Gervais has been married to husband Andy for 26 years and she has two teenage daughters (Camille, a junior at Des Moines North High School and Bridget, a sophmore music major in French Horn at Drake). The Gervais family has three pets: a mini Schnauzer (Emma), a Maine Coon cat (Figaro), and a small tabby (Clara Schumann). In her spare time, Mrs. Gervais enjoys playing tennis, sewing, scrapbooking and making family videos.
Joe Samuelson – Physical Education
My name is Joe Samuelson, and I am the Physical Education teacher, Activities Director, K-5 Technology Teacher, and IT guy.
I graduated from Simpson College with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education with K-8 and 5-12 endorsements. This is my second year at Christ the King School.
I believe that all students should be taught healthy habits and the importance of being physically active, especially at such an important time in their lives. Having the knowledge and skills to stay healthy and active can benefit a student for their lifetime.
Previous to becoming a PE teacher I worked as an Information Security Analyst where I helped develop, maintain and enforce standard security processes for government healthcare systems. I am looking forward to teaching the K-5 students many things in Technology!
