Preschool at Christ the King
The Christ the King Preschool is a partner with Des Moines Public and a part of the Iowa Universal Preschool Grant. Because of this, we are able to offer tuition-free preschool!
We offer both morning and afternoon, preschool classes. Our preschool classes are in session five days a week.
Our preschool day consists of a variety of learning opportunities within whole group carpet time, small group learning, and individualized instruction. We focus on the social, emotional and academic growth of each child. It is important to give children many opportunities to succeed in each area. Children are also given choices into their own learning when it comes to our zone time. Zones are specific areas of our classrooms set up for children to learn and discover in their own form of play. Our zone time is a time where students can build, create, write, work on math and science skills and learn to socialize all through play and independent choice.
Rachel Dorpinghaus – Preschool/Transitional Kindergarten
I teach both preschool and Transitional Kindergarten here at CKS. I am originally from Clinton, Iowa, but moved to the Des Moines area for college. I graduated from Simpson College where I received my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, as well as endorsements in both early childhood education and reading. Early Childhood is my favorite age group to work with because of their love of learning and a strong sense of curiosity. My goal is to instill that sense of curiosity and create lifelong learners with a passion for school.
My name is Jessica Schwarz, I graduated from Hoover High School and then on to the University of Northern Iowa where I majored in Early Childhood Education with an endorsement in Special Education. I love the fast pace of preschool and all of the fun activities we get to do in the classroom. I love the staff and families here at Christ the King School and I am so excited for another year here!
My name is Ellen Moist. I am a lifelong member of Christ the King Parish, as well as a product of Christ the King School and Dowling Catholic High School.
I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in elementary education. I also have an emphasis in Early Childhood Education. Throughout the years I have had a variety of classes in literacy, math, and other content areas.
Education is always evolving and I feel it is important to be a lifelong learner. I teach in a Catholic school because I can’t imagine teaching anywhere else. My faith is such an important part of my daily life that I don’t know how I could separate it from my work, especially when my life’s work is that of forming young minds.
