Fifth Grade

Mrs. Bellcock

We keep very busy in 5th grade. JA Biztown is a program that combines in-class learning with a day-long visit to this fully-interactive simulated town facility. The program helps students connect the dots between what they learn in school and the real world. Even though 5th graders are not old enough to drive, work, vote, or be the boss, it doesn’t stop them from operating banks, managing restaurants, writing checks, and voting for mayor at JA Biztown!

Literacy remains a primary academic focus. The students experience both small and large group instruction at their reading level. The students participate in Literature Circles. In literature circles, small groups of students gather together to discuss a piece of literature in depth. The discussion is guided by students’ response to what they have read. It provides a way for students to engage in critical thinking and reflection as they read, discuss, and respond to books.

Fifth graders have daily homework. It is important to include reading at least 20 minutes every night as part of their homework.

  • Please check your child’s assignment notebook for homework as well as its due date. Your child is required to have his or her assignment notebook signed and checked everyday.
